Spotted in Lefkara village on Friday 28th October 2011 during our Oxi Day public holiday jaunt.

We try to go to a different place or village for every public holiday in Cyprus. Next one after Christmas will be for Epiphany on 6th January 2012.

Was yesterday the last time in the pool for 2011?

We wemt off up to the pool yesterday afternoon at about 2.30pm.

It was a warm day and hardly any breeze but just as we were leaving the house for the short drive to the Aphrodite Club, it clouded over :-(

However, the sun was out when we arrived and we were surprised to find only a few sunbeds available. Only 2 child was in the pool too which was a pleasant surprise. Often on a Sunday, the pool is full of screamers which I'm not very tolerable of.

I was the brave one - I went in the pool TWICE while my husband managed to sit and dangle his ankles into about 3 inches of the pool's surface before deciding it was too cold and that I must be quite mad! I did swim about 4 lengths and as long as I kept moving, it was okay...

After starting my new book - I decided on the Agatha Raisin mystery book The Terrible Tourist, which is set in Kyrenia (Turkish occupied north of Cyprus) and getting into quite a few pages of it, I found it was getting hot and sticky plus the flies were being a right royal pain in the bum (always the case when the weather starts to cool down). No option for it - back in the pool :-D

But, I can't see the weather lasting out long enough for another weekend of pool swimming. I may get into the sea but, we'll see...

Next Saturday in the early evening, we're off to the Angel Bar in Kolossi to help raise funds for Sirius Dog Sanctuary by attending Wez Thompson's book signing of "Alfie - A Dog's Tail". It starts at 6pm (if you want to see the signing, that is) followed by food at 7pm and a live band around 9pm.

Tickets are €10pp. Get tickets from all SBA Hives, and D N Satellite and Cable Solutions in Kolossi.

Remember, all funds from this charity event go to Sirius Dog Sanctuary in Moni, Limassol.

Getting busy with Cyprus baby equipment rentals again.

Well it's that time of year when the older kids are back in school and harried mums and dads with pre-school age children only can take advantage of lower holiday costs. Yeahey!

Having children below the school age means you cannot be penalised by those crafty Tour Operators putting up the prices over the main school holiday dates...

We've noticed particularly this year that we're receiving a lot of last minute inquiries for our prices and availability to rent car seats and travel cots this month so must assume the recent economy crisis is affecting the pre-booking in advance of holidays to Cyprus and presumably other holiday destinations....

Cyprus with Babies is a part-time, home run business so we do not carry a huge amount of stock. Therefore, we would like to apologise in advance if for any reason we cannot meet your needs for last minute bookings.

Where possible, please try to contact us at least 2 - 3 weeks prior to your holiday arrival date. For Cyprus residents anticipating the impending arrival of your grandchildren we do realise that quite often they turn up unannounced or at the drop of a hat and so for our "regular" customers, we will always do our utmost to fulfill your needs.

Temporary Secretary - Brilliant Blog!

I found this fab blog the other day and meant to "do" something with it over the weekend - but, you know how it goes.... Too little time to get to grips with "stuff"

So, here it is.... This particular post was one I found intriguing entitled "Back To School"

This outfit I am wearing does resemble a school uniform, it was unintentional! "School girl" was definitely not the look I was going for! I think it's because I look a bit younger (I am 26 years old - and I still get ID'd. Even for a ordering a cup of tea at a pub once!) and because of that, I can't pull off it off in the fashionable way like Alexa Chung. I'm wearing it with a black skirt here so a little bit boring but will style it differently next time.

I think this week, everyone is back at school or college and normality resumes. For uni students, it will be freshers week soon - I am really jealous! I am, of course, not a student anymore. I miss my student loan! As bad as this sounds, my first stop was always Thorntons and then M&S for food (treats!). Good luck to everyone who are about to start university this September. Regretfully, I did not make the most of my first year. I was very financially unprepared. Looking back, it seems stupid how I had little I did save. I had money but just not enough. The loan went on rent and I spent all my time selling all my possessions on eBay to earn some extra money. I came home every weekend, and I didn't join in with very much as a fresher. It wasn't until the end of 1st year that I came out of my shell a little bit, started going out and then I spent the summer saving money so that I could enjoy 2nd year (which I did!) If I could do first year all over again, I would do it differently.

Thank you so much for the nice comments on mine and Oscar's first video! I might do more vids, but I'm really quite shy (and I hate my own voice!) so I'm not sure, I definitely need to practise! But I would love to show everyone some Temporary:Secretary jewellery because that is something I've always wanted to do. I get emails from people asking if they can have freebies so they can review our jewellery on YouTube, which, unfortunately, is a request I can no longer fulfil. I think this is something I'd like to do myself. Of course, not to review it (it would be so incredibly bias views!) but I think it's nice to see something live rather than as an image, and it is a good way to show people how big or small a piece of jewellery is). If I was to start doing this then I'd start with rings because they're my favourite type of jewellery at the moment and I have SO many that are available in the shop. I would love your feedback on this, whether it is something you'd like to watch, or if you have suggestions on what you'd like to see (more of Oscar?) then I am happy to hear what you think! I'm out of my depth when it comes to vlogging.

Lefkara traditional Cyprus lace - a dying trade?

NICOSIA, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Lefkara, a village 50km south of Cyprus' capital Nicosia, is not only famous for its beautiful scenery, but also for its traditional handmade embroidery craft.

But traditional embroidery, which has been so popular in Cyprus, is on the brink of disappearing because the younger generation shows no interest in learning it.

During a visit to Lefkara recently, many foreign visitors were seen in the village. They said they liked the food, the environment and especially the embroidery.

Mandy from Holland told Xinhua it was the second time her family was visiting Lefkara. "It's nice here with good vibes all around. What I'm impressed most is the lace work," she said.

History has it that when the Venetians ruled Cyprus from 1489 to 1570, they taught the craft of lace embroidery, or Lefkaritiko, to the women of Lefkara village. Since then, the craft has been passed down from one generation to another.

Initially, the women of Lefkara used to decorate their own houses with lacework. Towards the end of the 19th century, they realized the works of art could be sold to decorate the houses of people from other regions as well.

Now Lefkaritiko lace has become world famous and the village has become a popular destination for tourists from home and abroad.

Young girls traditionally learn embroidery from their mothers. In the past, all the women in the village knew how to do Lefkaritiko. To this day, women -- especially older women -- still sit in front of their houses and do embroidery. However, this sight is likely to disappear in the near future since few young girls of the village show interest in embroidery.

Maria is a high school student. She has two elder sisters, but none of them knows embroidery. "It is too difficult, it takes a lot of time to learn and make. I have no time to learn and no interest in making it," she said.

Tasoula learned embroidery when she was 12 years old. She runs a shop where she sells her embroideries. Tasoula said her daughter, who is an accountant, will not take over her business.

"My daughter can do embroidery, but it is only a hobby," she said.

However, Tasoula thinks the craft of embroidery will not disappear even if young women of the village are taking up other jobs. "It will not disappear because it is tradition, something we have to look after. The tourists come here, they buy, so it will not die," she stated.

Rouvis runs the biggest embroidery shop in Lefkara which opened in the 70s. She says hers is the first embroidery shop in the village.

Rouvis said there is no future for the embroidery craft despite the fact that there are more than 60 embroidery shops in the village.

"There is no future for family embroidery. Now the girls prefer studying and having a better career than making a piece of lace for 2 or 3 months and getting 200 to 300 euros for it," she said.

Despite being pessimistic about the future of embroidery, Rouvis is teaching her daughter Elena the craft. Elena, who is 12, takes a keen interest in embroidery.

In order to preserve the traditional craft, the local government of Lefkara has started giving free lessons to teach the girls of the village how to do embroidery.

Stella, an official at Lefkara Municipality, told Xinhua that they organized 4 classes last year with about 20 girls in every class. "We organized 3 classes this year and will organize more in the future," she said.

It is believed that during Venetian rule, the great Italian painter Leonardo Da Vinci visited Lefkara and bought embroidered tablecloth from here. To this day, the embroidery Da Vinci bought is the best-selling item in Lefkara.

Tragedy in Cyprus - Monday 11th July 2011

It's been a very bad week in Cyprus for residents and a number of families involved in the tragedy at Vasilikos power station on Monday 11th July.

Help tackle international parental child abduction

Every other day a British child is abducted by a parent to a country which has not signed the 1980 Hague Convention on international parental child abduction, according to new research released today by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The latest figures represent a 10% increase in new cases handled by the FCO in 2010/2011 and have been released to mark the launch of their child abduction prevention campaign.

Help Wez Thompson (a morning DJ on BFBS Radio 1 in Cyprus) raise funds for Sirius Dog Sanctuary.

He’s just written the first chapter of a kiddies book entitled “Alfie – A Dog’s Tail”.

Alfie is a little dog that Wez found and gave a new home. A short while ago he found another stray dog and took it to Sirius Dog Sanctuary so they could try to find it a home as it just wasn’t possible for him to have 2 dogs.

Sadly, he found the sanctuary had a total lack of space but even so they still agreed to take the little dog. He was given an ID disc and a chain so the little dog could be kept safe in the compound.

He said as he was about to chain the dog up he just felt “this ain’t right” and ended up taking the little dog back home with him and giving Sirius Dog Sanctuary €50 to help with their funding!

Luckily, it all ended happily and the dog was later rehomed as a result of Wez telling his story on his weekday radio show.

So, the rest of the book will initially be published as an eBook but Wez is also hoping to get it published in hard copy too.

Aphrodite Club visit - an early start to summer in Cyprus?

It was a beautiful day yesterday so we took our books up and headed off to the Aphrodite Club complex for a sit on a sunbed and lunch by the pool.

I had spaghetti carbonara, which was very nice and creamy but a little too salty for my taste. Other half plumped for a village salad with lashings of olive oil (added by himself - not the chef).

I took some photos overlooking the bay at Akrotiri and on the way back stopped to take a few shots after we exited the highway at the Kouris Dam turnoff (our tsunami escape route if we should ever get such a thing in Cyprus), then snapped off some more as we were driving down into the village of Ypsonas.

I'll share them with you here....

The Right of Residence in the EU page offers a wealth of knowledge so check it out first!

Green Monday, Cyprus Weather and Chemtrails

Conspiracy Theories, Chemtrails and the Weather.

So, the weathermen were correct! Green Monday has been a definite day for a mixed bag of weather....

Fine and sunny this morning with some cloud, overcast by lunchtime until the heavens opened with torrential rain followed by hailstone - for all of 10 minutes. Back to sunshine, clouding over later this afternoon.

All I can say is I'm betting it will go dark before tomorrow!

Now, that leads me onto my next thought..... Chemtrails, do they or don't they exist? Is someone really trying to control our weather in Cyprus as is often discussed in the Cyprus Mail online version of our daily newspaper? I'm not certain I believe it, but I do so love a conspiracy theory.

Cyprus weather has been very good to us this week.

The weather this week has been fantastic for this time of year.

It's 7 years this week that we came to live permanently in Cyprus and this is the mildest winter we've had so far.

Temperatures this week have been displayed as 20c most days but it does look like Green Monday is likely to be a bit of a let down for those who are planning going out to eat veggies and fly their kites :-(

But hey, we've got a couple of days of gorgeous weather before then and who knows - the miserable weather may just pass us by!

That's all folks for today. It's Friday and I now have a nice long weekend off work.

Maybe a trip up to Mount Olympus is in order - check out the Ski Cyprus webcam.

Boycott UK Petrol Giants Campaign - Esso & BP

Hmmmm, it doesn't really affect me as I'm not in the UK but I thought this an interesting concept so I decided to share the email contents with you all...

Then again, it could be a hoax - you never know with these emails! - Read on

Please see what you think and pass it on if you agree with it.

We are hitting £129.9 a litre in some areas now and soon we will be faced with paying £1.50 per litre. So Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign' that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS - not sellers control the market place. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one) i.e. ESSO and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If all of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)....and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on. By the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it.....

THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all YOU have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all (and not buy at ESSO/BP). How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell,Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Jet etc. i.e. Boycott BP and Esso.

Edit: I just "googled" it on Snopes.com website and it looks like something similar may have been doing the rounds since 2005. But hey, it's still a great idea!

Yeahey, the weather is glorious today with a light breeze and sunny skies.

It's sooooooo good, I can hang my washing out!

We're off to Ryan's Grill at the end of Akrotiri strip in a short while for a slap up Sunday lunch buffet to have a pre-Christmas celebration with our good friends Helen, Dave, Barry & Vera. I'm hoping we get a table in the room overlooking the salt lake!

Dust storm hits Cyprus - December 2010

We had some really "iffy" weather yesterday in Cyprus....

We woke to very windy weather and a touch of rain and then as I was leaving for work we could see a reddish/yellow cloud coming slowly up from the bottom of the street.

It looks like Lady Sahara may have sent one of her famous clouds across the water to us!

We managed to get some shots with the camera of the sun covered by the dust and appearing as silver instead of golden yellow.

However, today - it's bright and sunny with a gorgeous turquoise sky!

Our solar powered lights are working again!

Not for long apparently :-( Looks like we may have a few nasty days ahead of us but picking up again soon.

We got rain yesterday and boy, it poured down - all day!

It finally went and did it yesterday....

The heavens opened and we were deluged for most of the day or at least from around 11am in Limassol.

We had heavy rain, lightning and thunder with the roads being flooded and rivers of rain water pouring down the street where I work to the roundabout at St Nicholas.

The bad weather continued through the night, knocking our satellite tv off from about 6.30pm for an hour and the thunder, lightning and strong winds were ongoing when we went to bed just before midnight. And, it tripped the power of course!

The weather forecast isn't much better for the weekend either. We got up to rain again this morning and although it did brighten for a spell, it's going a bit murky again as I type....

I've got some pictures I took with my phone from my office window looking towards the huge Santa Claus on St Nicholas roundabout:

This one below is of my office. I do work with other people but they abandoned me for a fag break! We're moving soon to a slightly different location but a bit closer to the Post Office.

To stay informed, weather wise - keep an eye on the Limassol Weather link in the right hand column. It's damn cold today and apparently will be cooler still tomorrow. Urgh!

And for those of you who may feel a trip up Troodos to Mount Olympus coming on, take a look at the Cyprus ski resort webcam before you travel. They reckon we may get snow up there this weekend!

Christmas lights are up and on!

Ha! We've finally gone and done it....

The Christmas tree has been up and outside for the last 6yrs - all we do, is switch it on and off each year!

We've been out and replaced our old rope lights with a shine new set along the front patio railings today and now we're all lit up and looking lovely. No snow here in sunny Cyprus though!

At the side of the house over the car port, we have some fabulous coloured rice lights and these are great because - wait for it...... they are solar powered!!!

Hands up those of you in UK who are reeeeeeeeeeally jealous now!

But hey, don't worry - we've been told it's going to rain and go cold at the weekend :-(

I made it to Limassol today - no problems!

Yeahey!

The car started with no trouble this morning and got me to work and home again this evening with no trouble at all. Phew!!!!!

It's been another nice and sunny day but temperatures are back to normal for this time of year, which means around 22c - 24c in the daytime and it's around 18c just now as I'm updating my blog for today (20:04 Cyprus time).

But.... it's not looking so good for Akrotiri weather at the weekend :-(

I will try to keep the camera handy to keep you update!

Meanwhile, I'm very much looking forward to my friend Jeans' arrival on 26 December. She comes to see us every year and always stays at the same hotel on the seafront. I'm hoping to take a couple of days away from work at the beginning of her stay and planning to have New Year's Eve free in case there's some last minute shopping we may fancy!

Not sure when the shops are open over the festive period but my office is closed on Christmas Eve....

Watch out for the pre-Christmas sales if you're here on holiday. We tend to do things a little differently when it comes to sales in Cyprus!

The Weather and Car Trouble.

Yeah well, it finally went and did it!

Last night the heavens opened and it well and truly leathered it down on us in good old sunny Cyprus.... Over in the West (Paphos direction) we could see a fabulous electrical storm but did we get that excitement? No, not on your nelly!

Heavy rain during the evening before we went to bed and part way through the night too. I woke up around 5am and it was still raining but not as heavy and this morning, up at 07:30 to sunshine and cooler temperatures than of late although in keeping with those as normal for December.

It's stayed bright and sunny all day!

Got to the car this evening and couldn't get in it..... My central locking system plays up a lot and especially in winter but tonight, the battery was as flat as a flute. I managed to get in by the passenger door and had to phone my lovely other half to come into town to give me a jump start.

Will see how this turns out in the morning...... watch this space.

What a fabulous month November has been in Cyprus!

We've had an absolutely gorgeous month!

My parents arrived for their annual monthly visit on 3rd November and have had only 1 overcast day. They've spent everyday on a sunlounger by the pool, walked along the seafront at the Amathus end of Limassol tourist area and fed the stray cats there.

The afternoon is usually spent having a cup of tea and a biscuit at Chasers Bar (near to the Esso filling station) at Ayios Tychonas. Price €2 each and comes in a pot rather than a teabag in a cup!

They go back home tomorrow and will have to deal with the freezing cold UK weather. Luckily, they only have a few weeks back home and then they will be off for their annual visit to Malta.

Lucky them!

Bring on retirement so we can join in please......

28th October is a public holiday in Cyprus to celebrate Οχι or "No" day.

It's the anniversary of the day the Greeks said "No"!

An ultimatum was presented to Metaxas by the Italian ambassador in Greece, Emanuele Grazzi on 28th October 1940. After a party in the German embassy in Athens Grazzi demanded Greece to allow Axis forces to enter Greek territory and occupy certain unspecified locations or face a war.

It was supposedly answered with a single word: όχι or no.

In response to the refusal by Metaxas the Italian troops stationed in Albania attacked the Greek border at 05:30 am.

This marked the beginning of Greece's participation in World War II.

On the morning of October 28 the Greek population marched into the streets, no matter their political affection and shouted "οχι".

Since 1942, 28 October has been celebrated as Ohi Day.

Making Egypt 'accessible' for tourists

It's always been a problem but why should people who are not so mobile feel they cannot visit the ancient and historical sights of Egypt.

After our recent return from Luxor, Egypt we found that although many works are being carried out within the town the kerbs and pavements are so high above the road, it makes it extremely difficult for able bodied people to walk along the footpaths and most will walk in the road.

If you've ever experienced the driving skills in Luxor around the station and Television Street, imagine trying to push someone in a wheelchair!
